Art Pottery Gallery

Art Pottery covers many styles from many potteries. This gallery features a changing range from Ault, Bretby, Linthorpe, Lauder and others. Most pieces are British and date from the early 20th century. We occasionally include pieces from other periods or countries simply because we like them and have been unable to resist doing so! Information about the individual potteries can be found below.

Shelley

SHELLEY Harmony ART DECO Glazed Large GINGER JAR/ Vase

A lovely and large lidded Ginger Jar by classic British pottery Shelley. Strong Art Deco design with bands of rich orange ochres, yellows, blues and blue-grey.

Back stamped 'Shelley, England' with the mark used between 1925 and 1945.  Photographs of the stamp can be supplied if required.

The piece is large at approx. 20 cm by 16 cm wide. Condition is very good with only minor paint flake in some areas. A very striking Art Deco piece in good colours.

BRETBY Pottery Turquoise Jardinière

Bretby Art Pottery, more properly known as Tooth & Co. Ltd., was started in 1883 by Henry Tooth and William Ault. Ault left after four years to set up his own pottery. Bretby stayed in the hands of the Tooth family until 1933, and after the second World War became known as Tooth and Company Limited Bretby Art Pottery.

This is a charming jardinière in turquoise. The design is in relief and shows a curious scene of men, possible monks or holy men, in various settings. It is impressed on the base "Bretby England 955 A". Condition is excellent. Height is 11 1/2 cm diameter is 10 cm. There are no chips or cracks. Some light crazing. A bright, solid piece with an unusual design.
