THE SHETLAND SOUK > Moroccan rugs, wall hangings and throws available in Shetland.

These pieces are no longer available online but a selection can be found at The Scrapstore in Lerwick. We are currently travelling to re-stock our range of Berber rugs. If you are interested in particular styles, colours or sizes of rugs please email peeriemole@yahoo.com and we will endevour to source pieces for you.

These rugs are handwoven by the Berber tribes in the Rif Mountains of Morocco. They include traditional and contemporary work. The rugs are made from cactus silk fibres, cotton, goat and lambs' wool. All the dyes are hand worked and made from 100% natural Rif sources such as poppy flower, indigo, henna, saffron, mint and kohl. The story of each rug is noted below.

The pieces were sourced from a Berber co-operative in Chefchaouen, a mountain town in the Rif. The co-operative aims to promote this high quality work and to acheive fair prices for the makers. Moroccan design has recently been featured on television programmes such as The Home Show and is reguarly seen in interior design magazines. These are authentic pieces individually selected and carrried over land and sea from Morocco to Shetland during November.

Click on the rugs for enlarged images. I also have a range of glass and ceramics in the Ceramateek Galleries.
